Le tribunal de grande instance du Mfoundi a, au terme du procès le 18 août 2026, condamné Landry Batek Yebel à la peine de mort pour avoir assassiné sa mère, Louisette Ngo Yebel, en 2024.

La peine capitale. C’est la décision que la justice a prononcée contre Landry Batek Yebel le jeune secrétaire d’administration, diplômé de l’Ecole nationale d’administration et de magistrature. Le tribunal de grande instance du Mfoundi a rendu son verdict mardi dernier au terme d’une procédure engagée depuis environ deux ans. Après enquêtes, confrontations et autres procédures de recherche des preuves, le jeune homme de 25 ans est reconnu coupable de l’assassinat de sa mère, Louisette Ngo Yebel, 47 ans, journaliste et experte en communication à la Commission des forêts d’Afrique centrale (Comifac).

Les faits remontent au 7 avril 2024. Le corps sans vie mutilé de la victime a été retrouvé emballé dans deux valises près d’un cours d’eau au quartier Etoa Meki à Yaoundé. Suite à cette découverte macabre, les investigations ont conduit les gendarmes vers le fils de la victime. Ce dernier passera aux aveux et la reconstitution des faits sera effectuée.

Le crime a été commis au quartier Damas à Yaoundé, au domicile familial. Le fils, au cours d’une dispute sur la disparition du mobilier acheté par la mère, va étouffer cette dernière à l’aide d’un taie d’oreiller. Après le décès, il va découper le corps avant de l’emballer. Pour faire disparaitre les traces du crime, il fait appel à son ami lequel va abandonner le véhicule de la victime à Soa.

La gravité de l’affaire conduira à découvrir que le jeune aurait aussi, quelque temps avant, donné la mort à sa grand-mère. Sans que le cas soit porté à la connaissance du public. Condamné à mort pour l’assassinat de sa mère, que reste-t-il à faire du jeune homme ? La juridiction a prononcé une peine prévue par la loi. Mais elle n’est pas appliquée depuis 1997. Il revient aux autorités compétentes de décider la manière dont la décision sera exécutée. Les précédents condamnés à mort n’ayant pas été exécutés demeurent en prison.

Joseph-Antoine Bell n’hésite pas à bousculer les habitudes. L’ancien gardien et international camerounais estime aujourd’hui que le football féminin offre un meilleur spectacle et surtout davantage de garanties en matière d’organisation que le football masculin au Cameroun.

« Le football féminin au Cameroun aujourd’hui est meilleur que le football masculin », affirme-t-il, mettant notamment en avant la régularité du championnat féminin. Selon lui, la Ligue féminine bénéficie d’un calendrier mieux structuré, avec un programme établi pour la saison, contrairement à la Ligue masculine, qu’il juge moins bien organisée.

Pour Bell, les récentes performances du football féminin camerounais pourraient également servir d’accélérateur. Il reconnaît toutefois que le pays a encore du chemin à parcourir pour atteindre le niveau de certaines nations africaines de référence, notamment le Maroc et l’Égypte. « Ce n’est pas encore du niveau du Maroc, de l’Égypte, mais ce qui est fait ici est déjà meilleur que pour les hommes », souligne-t-il.

L’ancien international salue par ailleurs la décision de l’État camerounais d’accorder les mêmes primes aux joueuses qu’aux joueurs, une mesure qu’il considère comme une avancée majeure pour la reconnaissance du football féminin.

À ses yeux, cette dynamique pourrait désormais attirer davantage de partenaires privés et donner une nouvelle visibilité aux joueuses camerounaises. « Je crois que désormais le football féminin au Cameroun aura plus de sponsors et de regards », pronostique-t-il.

Un constat qui, s’il venait à se confirmer dans les prochaines années, pourrait profondément modifier la hiérarchie du football camerounais. Pour Joseph-Antoine Bell, le football féminin n’est plus seulement une discipline à soutenir : il est désormais un secteur capable de montrer la voie.

BEIJING, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday emphasized that China and Ecuador should strengthen the synergy of their development strategies and implement the cooperation plan for jointly building the Belt and Road.

The two countries should deliver on cooperation projects in energy, minerals, infrastructure, finance and other sectors, and actively explore cooperation in areas including the digital economy, green development, new energy and artificial intelligence, Xi said when holding talks with President of the Republic of Ecuador Daniel Roy-Gilchrist Noboa Azín in Beijing.

Noboa is on a state visit to China from Aug. 16 to 23 at the invitation of Xi.

Noting this year marks the 10th anniversary of the China-Ecuador comprehensive strategic partnership, Xi said no matter how the international landscape changes, China has always viewed China-Ecuador relations from a strategic and long-term perspective.

China stands ready to work with Ecuador to continuously elevate bilateral relations to new heights and deliver greater benefits to the people of both countries, he said.

Xi said China respects and supports Ecuador in exploring a development path that suits its national conditions. China is willing to intensify exchanges between the two countries across various sectors, including governments, legislatures, and political parties, and enhance experience sharing on governance, he added.

The Chinese president encouraged both sides to continue unlocking the potential of the free trade agreement so that its dividends can benefit more businesses and consumers. He also expressed China’s willingness to cooperate with Ecuador in areas such as healthcare, poverty alleviation, disaster prevention and mitigation, in support of Ecuador’s national development.

Calling China an important partner and friend of Ecuador, Noboa said bilateral relations have entered a new phase, delivering tangible benefits to the two peoples.

He said Ecuador is willing to deepen political mutual trust with China, supports China in safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and respects China’s position on the Taiwan question.

Noting that Ecuador attaches great importance to cooperation with China, Noboa called on the two sides to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation in economy and trade, finance, minerals, renewable energy, science and technology, culture and other fields.

Ecuador will expand its exports to China, and welcomes more Chinese enterprises to invest and operate in Ecuador, which is expected to help improve the well-being of the people and facilitate the development of the country, he added.

The two heads of state exchanged views on the situation in the Latin American and Caribbean region.

Xi said China supports Latin American countries in upholding independence and self-reliance, pursuing foreign cooperation based on their national interests, and safeguarding regional peace and stability.

Xi stressed that China has always maintained that the status of the Latin American and Caribbean region as a zone of peace should not be undermined, the course of development and revitalization of Latin American and Caribbean countries should not be disrupted, and the right of Latin American and Caribbean countries to independently choose their cooperation partners should not be interfered with.

Noting Ecuador highly values China’s position and role, Noboa said Ecuador is always willing to be a good friend of China on the other side of the Pacific Ocean.

After the talks, the two heads of state attended a signing ceremony for multiple cooperation agreements in areas such as green industry, economic and trade cooperation, the digital economy and people’s livelihood.

Prior to the talks in the Great Hall of the People, Xi held a welcome ceremony for Noboa. Xi also hosted a welcome banquet for him in the evening. ■
