BEIJING, Feb. 12 (Xinhua) — China’s Ning Zhongyan claimed bronze in the men’s 1,000m speed skating, delivering the country’s first medal on ice at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. Ning clocked 1:07.34 – his best low-altitude time of the season – to secure his first Olympic podium. Jordan Stolz of the United States took gold in 1:06.28, breaking the previous Olympic record set by Dutch skater Gerard van Velde at Salt Lake City 2002. Stolz finished 0.50 seconds ahead of Dutch skater Jenning de Boo, who took silver.

Switzerland’s Franjo von Allmen captured the men’s super-G title to become just the third male alpine skier to win three gold medals at a single Winter Games.

Italy celebrated a historic double in luge, first capturing the inaugural Olympic women’s doubles title before adding gold in the men’s doubles. In the women’s doubles, Andrea Voetter and Marion Oberhofer combined for one minute 46.284 seconds, while host duo Emanuel Rieder and Simon Kainzwaldner followed by winning the men’s doubles in 1:45.086.
