SHANGHAI, July 15 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping called for advancing high-quality urban renewal on Wednesday during an inspection trip to Shanghai.

Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, stressed the need to fully embrace the people-centered philosophy of urban development.

Urban renewal initiatives should be carried out in a thorough, meticulous and effective manner in a bid to continuously enhance the people’s sense of fulfillment, happiness and security, he said.

In Huangpu District, Xi visited a residential community, where four buildings originally built in the 1950s have been renovated and upgraded, significantly improving residents’ living conditions.

He stressed that the Party Central Committee attaches great importance to urban development and has pledged to build modernized cities for the people, with the renovation of old residential communities as an important part of that effort.

At the home of a retired resident, Xi looked closely at the living conditions and said that the CPC is dedicated to serving the people, and only when the people live in peace and contentment can the Party and the government rest assured. He expressed the hope that retirees could make the most of retirement and lead even better family lives.

Xi then visited a community fresh produce stall to inspect the supply of fruits and vegetables. He stressed the importance of improving community governance and building well-equipped communities and convenient living circles.

During the inspection tour, Xi stressed that China is now in a critical period for flood control. He urged all localities to prepare for worst-case scenarios and extreme situations, closely monitor rainfall, flood conditions and typhoon developments, conduct thorough and meticulous inspections to identify potential risks, and make solid efforts in flood prevention and control, emergency responses and disaster relief to effectively safeguard people’s lives and property.

Cai Qi, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee, accompanied Xi on the inspection tour. ■

L’élimination de l’Angleterre en demi-finale de la Coupe du monde face à l’Argentine (2-1) a laissé des traces. Au lendemain de cette désillusion, Thomas Tuchel se retrouve au centre de la tempête. Le sélectionneur des Three Lions est vivement critiqué pour ses choix tactiques, accusé d’avoir abandonné l’ambition offensive de son équipe au moment où elle semblait proche de décrocher une place en finale.

La défaite est difficile à digérer outre-Manche. Alors que l’Angleterre avait pris l’avantage grâce à Anthony Gordon et semblait tenir son billet pour le dernier acte du Mondial, Thomas Tuchel a fait le choix de sécuriser son équipe à l’extrême. À trente minutes du coup de sifflet final, les entrées d’Ezri Konsa, Dan Burn et Nico O’Reilly ont été interprétées comme un signal de repli par de nombreux observateurs.

Une stratégie défensive qui n’a finalement pas résisté à la pression argentine. Enzo Fernandez a égalisé à la 85e minute avant que Lautaro Martinez ne délivre l’Albiceleste dans le temps additionnel (90+2e). En quelques minutes, les espoirs anglais se sont envolés et les choix de Tuchel ont été placés sous le feu des projecteurs.

« Une capitulation » : les médias internationaux condamnent Tuchel

Sur les plateaux de télévision britanniques, les critiques n’ont pas tardé. L’ancien international anglais Wayne Rooney a notamment regretté l’attitude de l’équipe après l’ouverture du score. Selon lui, les Three Lions ont laissé l’Argentine reprendre confiance : « Nous avons reculé et nous les avons laissés venir. Ils se créaient des occasions et nous avons fini par craquer. Les changements effectués ne nous ont pas aidés. Je suis anéanti », a-t-il déploré.

À l’étranger, le constat est encore plus sévère. En Espagne, le quotidien Marca n’a pas mâché ses mots, évoquant un véritable « désastre » : « Après le premier but, l’Angleterre s’est essoufflée, Messi a émergé, l’Argentine a pris confiance… et Tuchel a capitulé. Les changements du coach allemand, avec parfois six défenseurs sur le terrain, ont acculé l’Angleterre. »

Le journal espagnol El Periódico parle même d’une « humiliation », tandis qu’en Italie, Il Mattino accuse le technicien allemand d’avoir tout gâché : « Ses choix trop frileux ont permis à l’Argentine de prendre confiance et de s’imposer. L’une des pires prestations d’un entraîneur en phase finale de Coupe du monde. »

Même l’Allemagne critique l’ancien entraîneur du PSG

Dans son pays natal, Thomas Tuchel n’échappe pas non plus aux reproches. Le quotidien allemand Die Welt résume la soirée anglaise par deux mots : « panique et capitulation ». Le média souligne notamment la chute spectaculaire de la possession anglaise après l’ouverture du score, avec seulement 12 % de possession entre le but de Gordon et l’égalisation argentine.

Les anciens internationaux allemands ont également pointé du doigt le manque d’audace des Anglais. Mats Hummels a regretté une équipe trop recroquevillée : « Ils se sont tout simplement barricadés. Juste après le 1-0, Harry Kane a dégagé le ballon depuis son propre point de penalty. Ils se sont repliés beaucoup trop tôt. »

Bastian Schweinsteiger, consultant pour la télévision allemande ARD, a lui aussi ciblé les choix de Tuchel : « C’était incroyable, il a manqué d’audace pour prendre une initiative. Il faut avoir confiance en soi pour attaquer. »

Une petite finale déjà sous tension

L’Angleterre devra désormais tenter de sauver son tournoi lors de la petite finale face à la France samedi. Mais après cette élimination douloureuse, l’image laissée par les Three Lions est loin de faire l’unanimité.

Pour Thomas Tuchel, la pression est maximale. Celui qui était arrivé avec l’ambition de ramener enfin un trophée mondial à l’Angleterre doit désormais répondre aux critiques qui l’accusent d’avoir renié ses principes au moment le plus important. Une défaite qui pourrait longtemps rester associée à son nom.

ASTANA, July 15 (Xinhua) — An event promoting the fifth volume of « Xi Jinping: The Governance of China » was held on Wednesday in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan.

Participants said that the fifth volume presents the latest achievements of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, and is an authoritative work that can help the international community understand Chinese modernization and contemporary China.

China and Kazakhstan are fellow travelers on the path toward modernization, they said, adding that deepening exchanges between the two countries on governance experiences centered on Xi’s important works is of great significance for advancing the building of a China-Kazakhstan community with a shared future.

Addressing the event, Elnur Beisenbayev, head of the Domestic Policy Department of the Executive Office of the President of Kazakhstan, said the event for the book marks a new milestone in mutual learning between the Kazakh and Chinese civilizations.

Kazakhstan is carrying out a series of economic and social reforms, accelerating its modernization based on the country’s own national conditions, said Beisenbayev, noting that the two countries share many similarities as they advance along the path of modernization.

The governance philosophy and development strategies embodied in the book are of great value to Kazakhstan, he added.

Askar Umarov, head of the Central Communications Service under the Kazakh President, said China has made remarkable achievements in such fields as the economy, science and technology, culture, the rule of law and diplomacy over the past decades, and its experience deserves in-depth study and broad reference by Kazakhstan.

The fifth volume reflects the key directions of contemporary China’s development, said Umarov, adding that the deeper Kazakhstan understands China’s development logic and long-term goals, the more fruitful exchanges and cooperation between the two countries will become.

Gulnar Shaimergenova, director of the China Studies Center in Kazakhstan, said that amid accelerating global changes, China has remained an important engine of global economic growth and a key force for international stability.

Noting that Xi’s works have been translated into dozens of languages and have attracted wide attention around the world, she said Xi’s thought has made important contributions to building global consensus and addressing major challenges facing global development.

During the event, the Chinese side presented Kazakh guests with copies of the Kazakh edition of the fourth volume and the Russian edition of the fifth volume of « Xi Jinping: The Governance of China. »

Representatives from think tanks, enterprises and universities of the two countries shared stories of how practical cooperation has benefited local communities. Participating experts exchanged views on topics including the China-Kazakhstan community with a shared future and high-quality Belt and Road cooperation.

The event was jointly organized by China’s State Council Information Office, China International Communications Group and the Chinese Embassy in Kazakhstan. More than 200 representatives from publishing houses, media organizations, think tanks, universities, enterprises and other sectors of the two countries attended the event. ■
