Ukraine war: Russian athletes to participate in Paris Olympics but with conditions

The International Olympic Committee has approved the participation of athletes from Russia and Belarus, but they will only participate as neutrals, and not represent their countries, because of the ongoing Ukraine war.

The United States, France, Germany and Britain recently approved the IOC’s plan for Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete in the Paris Olympics taking place from July 26 to August 11.

This decision comes despite the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, with the IOC and the International Paralympic Committee stipulating that athletes from these countries can compete if they have not publicly endorsed the invasion of Ukraine and have no military affiliations.

Russia and Belarus were banned from participating at the Olympics after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The ban also applied to individual athletes from Russia who were also banned from participating.

Ukraine’s President Vilodymir Zelensky threatened his country was going to boycott the games if Russian athletes were allowed to participate, even as neutrals.

But the stance appears relaxed at the moment.

In addition to their neutrality, Russian and Belarusian athletes will not sing their respective national anthems at the games and will not display their flags.

In order to maintain neutrality and avoid potential controversies, the IOC has developed an independent anthem, devoid of lyrics, to be played for any Russian or Belarusian athletes who clinch gold medals at the Paris Olympics.

The decision to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under neutral status has sparked mixed reactions among athletes, officials, and spectators worldwide.

While some argue that sports should remain separate from politics, others express concerns over the potential implications of allowing athletes from countries embroiled in geopolitical conflicts to participate in international sporting events.

Unarmed Woman Shot in Leg by Ambazonia Separatists

Tensions in Tatum have reached a boiling point following an incident where an unarmed woman was shot in the leg by armed men identifying themselves as Ambazonian separatist fighters. The woman sustained a gunshot wound to her right leg at close range, witnessed by horrified onlookers. The attackers accused her of being a “blackleg,” a derogatory term used for individuals perceived as opposing the separatist ideology. Their allegations stemmed from claims of her romantic involvement with a soldier.

Witnesses reported that the woman screamed in excruciating pain as she was shot in the right leg. Her current whereabouts remain unknown, triggering widespread condemnation and debate across social media platforms.

“This is not the way to gain support,” remarked Tiamuligh Desmond on Facebook. “If they [the separatists] were treating our people well, our people wouldn’t be cooperating with our enemies.”

The incident has reignited discussions about the nature of the conflict in the North West Region, with some residents arguing that the violence has strayed from its original cause.

“It is no longer the Anglophone crisis, but rather the North West crisis,” wrote Akwa E Teh on social media. “Anglophones in Bamenda have killed their brothers more than what the military has done. If you want to convince me that what you’re doing is correct, convince me to believe you. Don’t kill me to believe you.”

Others expressed despair over the deteriorating situation. “Oh God, how did we get here?” commented Marion Arrey, echoing the sentiments of many distressed by the violence.

Ernest Platini condemned the attackers, emphasising the sanctity of human life. “Idiots, their own crimes are worse than that woman’s. A woman represents humanity; harming her is an everlasting curse. Mama, God is in control, but I advise you to leave and make a home elsewhere,” he posted.

The incident underscores the deep divisions and ongoing violence in the region, with many calling for an end to the bloodshed. The uncertainty surrounding the woman’s fate emphasizes the urgent need for resolution and peace in the troubled area.

SDF to celebrate 34th anniversary with prayers seeking God’s guidance

By Daniel D.

The Social Democratic Front (SDF) party says it intends to celebrate its 34th anniversary on May 26 with an ecumenical service and a thanksgiving Mass to seek God’s guidance and blessing.

The anniversary celebration comes amid the party’s strive to galvanize grassroots supporters ahead of next year’s presidential elections.

The SDF’s National Chairman, Joshua Osih, has been on a nationwide tour to sensitize and assess the needs of Cameroonians.

But to build strong momentum and take over power in this nation, the party believes it needs God’s intervention.

“Given the current socio-political context of our country, it is important for us to come together in prayer for peace and thanksgiving on Sunday, May 26, 2024, to celebrate the 34th anniversary of our party,” said Njong Donatus Fonyuy, Secretary General of the party, in a circular.

He called on all the regional chairpersons of the party to galvanize militants for a special prayer session to thank God for the party’s 34 years of existence and to seek God’s guidance and blessings.

“This call for prayers is in addition to all the local manifestations that have been planned by our district chairpersons for that day,” he said.

This will be the first anniversary celebration since the SDF’s founding father, Ni John Fru Ndi, died in June 2023.

In his absence, the party is being led by Hon Joshua Osih, who won the chairmanship position in elections last October.

The SDF is striving to regain control of its lost territories, especially in its birthplace, North West Region, where it controls just one out of over 30 Municipal Councils.

Njong Donatus said militants should lift their voices in unity, asking for justice, peace, and prosperity to prevail in Cameroon, and for wisdom for its leaders as they celebrate their 34th anniversary.

“We believe that prayer has the power to bring about change and unite us for a common purpose. Let us set aside our differences and come together in faith and hope,” he said.

“As we stand together in prayer for the betterment of our country, let us also pray for the peaceful repose of the soul of our founding and pioneer National Chairman of Blessed Memory, Ni John Fru Ndi,” he added.

The SDF was launched on May 26, 1990, in Bamenda, at a time when Cameroon was still under a one-party system.

The party contested in the 1992 elections, the first after the reintroduction of multipartism, and claims to have won the vote but it was rigged in favor of President Paul Biya, who has ruled Cameroon since 1982.
